Why You Should Not Rely on Luck Alone When it Comes to Maintenance

Luck and St. Patrick’s Day go together; however, when it comes to caring for your heating and cooling equipment, luck is not a great policy. Your air conditioner and furnaceluck are major pieces of equipment inside your home and it is vital to stay up to date on maintenance to ensure they continue to run at optimal levels.

Benefits of Regular Maintenance:

-Helps extend the life of your heating and cooling equipment.
-Ensures that your equipment is running as efficiently as possible, saving you money.
-Serves as an early warning system for potential safety concerns that might arise.
-Improves your indoor air quality by keeping coils and blower parts in your AC cleaner.
-Decreases the costs and frequency of repairs.
-Can help to improve air circulation in your home.
-Creates better comfort control for your home.

Manufacturers typically recommend that you have your heating and cooling system serviced twice a year. Once in the fall/winter months for your heating equipment and once during the spring/summers months for your cooling equipment.

You can call us anytime at (866) 844-3770 to schedule your manufacturer recommend maintenance inspection.

Did You Know?
That if you join our Heating & Air Conditioning Club Membership Program, these bi-annual maintenance inspections are free with your membership? Call (866) 844-3770 to learn more!

Daylight Savings Time is This Weekend! Are You Ready to Spring Forward?

Daylight Savings Time is upon us once again. We will all spring forward one hour at 2:00 a.m. on March 12th, when Daylight Savings Time officially begins. While the idea of losing an hour this weekend may not sound like a ton of fun and our sleep schedules will take a few days to get used to the change, there is still one major benefit of the time change this weekend. The start of Daylight Savings means that we get an hour of more sunlight in the evenings. No more walking out of work after 5:00 p.m. and feeling like the day is over because the sun is setting. So the time change does come with some benefits after all.

Here are some handy tips to help you get the most of your time changing experience!

Daylight Savings

Daylight Savings To-Do List:

We change our clocks twice a year, so here is a list of three tasks you could plan to tackle when daylight savings begins and ends.

1. Dust and clean vents.

Something about vents just seems to call out to dust. It is also extremely easy to overlook vents when cleaning. Go ahead and wipe all of that built-up dust from your vents this weekend.

2. Do a quick battery check.

It is recommended that you check/replace the batteries in your smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors, twice a year. Changing your batteries the same time that you change your clocks is a great way to remember to stay up to date on this important task.

3. Change the direction of your ceiling fans.

During the warmer months, you want your ceiling fan to spin counter clockwise, this helps to push cooler air back down into your home.

What is the Number One Reason People Call a Plumber?

What is the number one reason people call a plumber? If you guessed a clogged drain, congratulations, you are correct! Whether it is in your bathroom, kitchen or drain pipes, a clogged drain can ruin anyone’s day. Check out these items that you should never put down your drain!

plumber

Common Drain Cloggers that Require a Plumber

You will want to avoid flushing the following items or pouring them down your drains unless sewage backup is something you enjoy.

  • Disposable diapers
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • “Flushable” wipes
  • Grease
  • Hair
  • Coffee Grounds
  • Wax
  • Paper products (besides toilet paper)
  • Toothpaste
  • Food particles
  • Oil (cooking)
  • Dirt
  • Soap

You will also want to avoid pouring hazardous waste and chemicals down your drains. These include gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, fertilizers, paint, etc.

Common Clogs By Room

Bathroom Clogs:

The most common clog found in bathrooms are caused by hair buildup. Try to remove clumps of hair from drains whenever you notice them. A buildup of soap and toothpaste can also cause clogs in bathrooms. The regular use of a safe enzyme-based drain cleaner product such as BioClean can help prevent slow drains and stoppages, call (866) 844-3770 to schedule an appointment, to learn more!

Kitchen Clogs:

Clogged drains occur in the kitchen more than any other room in your home. These clogs can be caused by a number of different factors, but most often happen because people pour the wrong items down the drain. Liquid fats are one of the main culprits and should never be poured down your drains. Additionally, avoid putting things like egg shells, coffee grounds, bones, pasta, celery or other stringy foods in your garbage disposal.

Take a Deep Breath and Follow These Tips for Better Indoor Air Quality

The indoor air quality in your home has a major effect on the health of your family. Indoor air pollutants that come from sources that distribute debris, particles or gases into your home are one of the main causes of poor indoor air quality. Additionally, insufficient or inadequate ventilation can also increase the levels of pollutants in your home.  A buildup of pet dander, dust, germs, etc. can also lower indoor air quality.

Tips for Better Indoor Air Quality:

1. Steam Clean Your Carpets Regularly.

Carpets and rugs collect dust, pet hair, dirt and other tiny particles. These contaminants can get kicked upped in the air when people and pets move throughout your home. Vacuuming alone is often not enough to remove all these pollutants; and actually, vacuuming can stir these particles up and release them back into the air you breathe. Steam cleaning your carpets is a more effective cleaning method.

2. Groom Your Fur Babies

We love our pets, but the hair and dander they leave around our homes is another story. Bathing, brushing and grooming will help cut down on the amount of pet hair in your home. Regular vacuuming will also help you manage pet hair and dander.

3. Use Your Exhaust Fan

Steamy showers and long relaxing baths increase the moisture levels in your bathroom. Moisture can be a breeding ground for bacteria and other pollutants that will eventually find their way into your air. Flipping on your exhaust fan when bathing is a great way to reduce the moisture in your bathroom. Remember that exhaust fans need to vent outdoors, if the exhaust fan in your home vents into your attic or another enclosed area, it is important to have your vents rerouted.

4. Replace Your Furnace Filters Regularly

There is a lot counting on your furnace filter, making it extremely important that you clean and/or replace your filters as needed or recommended. Keeping a clean filter helps to keep pollutants down in your home.

5. Wash Away Dust Mites

Dust mites accumulate in bedding, drapes, fabric shower curtains, etc., making it important to regularly launder these items.

6. Have Your Ductwork Professionally Cleaned

Ductwork can be a haven for dust, allergens, bugs, dust mites, dirt, rodents, etc., these pollutants will launch into the air your family breathes when you turn on your heating or cooling systems. Clean up the air in your home by having one of our Technical Experts professionally clean and sanitize your ductwork. Call (618)307-4911 to schedule a free air duct cleaning assessment.

  • Listen to your plumbing system’s needs! Listening is important in any relationship and your plumbing relationship is no different. Does your toilet sound like it is running longer than it should? Superbowl 51 and Your Plumbing; Keep Things Running Smoothly

Superbowl 51 is going to be one of the biggest sporting events of 2017 and it is coming at us quickly. Right now you’re probably making plans for the big day. If you’re planning on hosting your own party, you probably have your hands full with planning this and that, but don’t forget about your pipes during your Superbowl preparations. There are a few steps you can take to ensure that everything runs smoothly, plumbing wise, during your big Superbowl party.

superbowl

1. The first and most important step you can take to prevent a Superbowl plumbing disaster is to have a local plumber run a quick maintenance check on your plumbing system. Having your plumbing inspected before the big game is the best way to ensure that everything is working properly and give you some added peace of mind. After all, nothing ruins a Superbowl party like a clogged toilet at half-time.

2. Your toilet will be used heavily during your party and if it tends to give you trouble you might want to switch to thinner toilet paper. 1-ply works best and your guest won’t likely notice or mind the difference for one day.

3. In order to prevent your guests from flushing items like paper towels, “flushable” wipes (which are horrible for your toilet) and other paper products, you should remove all of these items from your bathroom. Additionally, you may want to remove any smaller objects that are around your toilet, to prevent any accidents.

4. Be wary of what goes in your garbage disposal. Let’s face it, what’s a football party without a ton of delicious and greasy foods? The problem is that your garbage disposal can only handle so much. It is extremely importachicken-wings-466556_960_720nt not to overload it with too much food at one time and always avoid pouring grease down your drain.  Wings are a popular Superbowl tradition, but you’ll want to avoid putting chicken bones in your disposal. Additionally, do not put any of the following food items down your garbage disposal at any time; potato peels, celery, artichokes, asparagus, lettuce, corn husks, carrots, onion skins, pasta, beans or rice.

5. Better safe than sorry. Keep a plunger next to your toilet just in case. And if you experience a really big clog or some other kind of plumbing disaster during your Superbowl party, don’t panic! We’ll still be open for emergency repairs. Call us at (866) 844-3770 or feel free to check us out online at TrustTiger.com and we’ll get your Superbowl party back on track!

6 Energy Saving Tips You Need To Try This Winter!

Winter has arrived in the Midwest and with it comes cold weather that can drive up your energy costs. No one wants to waste money unnecessarily and that is where these six handy energy saving tips come into play!

6 Energy Saving Tips You Need To Try This Winter!

1.  Let the light shine in.

Heating your home can be a major expense during chilly days. Give your furnace a bitenergy saving of a break and use the sun to help warm your home naturally. Open your curtains during the day and let the sunshine in. This action will help warm your home and cut energy costs.

*Remember to close your curtains again at night to help trap the warm air inside your home.

2. Switch over to LED lights.

Winter brings shorter days and less sunlight. Meaning, you are using more energy lighting your home. Help cut energy costs by switching over to more energy efficient and LED light bulbs.

3.  Prevent leaks.

Drafty doors and windows can drastically increase your heating bill each month. Even small leaks can really add up. It is best to make sure that you have properly sealed all of your doors and windows with caulk or weather strips.

* If you are concerned that your home may be leaking cold air, call us at (866)844-3770 to have an energy audit performed. An energy audit can show you all of the ways that your home is wasting energy and how you can potentially save a lot of money in the long run.

4. Keep the heat flowing.

Avoid blocking heating vents whenever possible. Not only is blocking heating vents a potential fire hazard but it also forces your heating system to work harder to keep your home warm. Make sure that your vents are not blocked by furniture, toys, clothes, etc.

5.  Make sure that your furnace is working properly.

An old, inefficient and/or malfunctioning furnace or heating system can have expensive consequences. Schedule a furnace tune-up and safety check today to ensure that your heating system is functioning at optimal levels.

*Remember having your heating system cleaned and maintained annually will increase the lifespan of your equipment and keep your system running at peak performance levels, saving you money in the long run.

6. Consider adding more insulation.

If your energy bill is higher than you believe it should be during the winter months, you may have an issue with your insulation. Insulation, especially in vulnerable locations like your attic, plays a major role in your home’s energy efficiency needs.
