Annual Maintenance, Equipment Checks and Your Wallet

Maintenance is an important part of home ownership and you don’t want to leave yoMaintenanceur heating and cooling systems off your yearly maintenance checklist.

By performing yearly maintenance and regularly checking your equipment, you can greatly extend the life of your units. Plus, you can fix any small problems before they grow into large, expensive problems.

It’s advised that at the very least, you have your air conditioning unit cleaned and checked early each spring before the weather gets too warm. And you should have your furnace checked each fall in late September or early October, before the first freeze.

By having your heating and cooling units inspected each year, you can ensure that whenever it’s time to flip on your air conditioning or furnace, it will run smoothly. Remember, maintenance means fewer unpleasant surprises down the road.

Unfortunately, busy schedules can make it hard to remember to have your much needed yearly maintenance compl10411_image6 copyeted. A great way to stay on top of your heating and cooling maintenance schedule is to sign up for an annual club membership.

That way you can completely forget about your annual
maintenance schedule, because when it’s time for your systems to be maintenance, someone will contact you to remind you and help you schedule an appointment.

A club membership is the easiest way to ensure that your air conditioner and furnace remain at their top performance levels!

Other great benefits of an annual club membership are:

  • SAME DAY SERVICE – GUARANTEED!
  • Reduced diagnostic fee
  • 10% Discount on all repairs
  • FREE Precision Tune-Up and safety inspection on your furnace and AC
  • Replacement Discounts
  • *$250 off a Complete New System

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Valentine’s Day? Your plumbing system probably wasn’t the answer that you came up with for that question. However, if Valentine’s Day is the holiday for love, why not show a little to your plumbing?

Valentine's Day

How to Show Your Plumbing System Some Love This Valentine’s Day

  • Keep your pipes nice and toasty! Adding insulation to the pipes located in attics, basements, crawl spaces, garages, etc. is a great way to protect yourself against frozen pipes.
  • Listen to your plumbing system’s needs! Listening is important in any relationship and your plumbing relationship is no different. Does your toilet sound like it is running longer than it should? Can you hear your faucet dripping at night? Is your water heater knocking or making a popping sound? These are cries for help from your plumbing system, it is best to not ignore them.
  • Flush away the build-up! Once a year you should have your water heater flushed to keep it functioning properly. Minerals and debris accumulate in your water heater over time, which can cause it to malfunction or stop working altogether.
  • Do not skip your annual plumbing maintenance and safety inspection! Think of annual maintenance like taking your plumbing system to couples counseling. It is a great way to a get ahead of any problems or issues that may arise. Call (866)844-3770 to schedule a plumbing inspection today!

Superbowl 51 and Your Plumbing; Keep Things Running Smoothly

Superbowl 51 is going to be one of the biggest sporting events of 2017 and it is coming at us quickly. Right now you’re probably making plans for the big day. If you’re planning on hosting your own party, you probably have your hands full with planning this and that, but don’t forget about your pipes during your Superbowl preparations. There are a few steps you can take to ensure that everything runs smoothly, plumbing wise, during your big Superbowl party.

superbowl

1. The first and most important step you can take to prevent a Superbowl plumbing disaster is to have a local plumber run a quick maintenance check on your plumbing system. Having your plumbing inspected before the big game is the best way to ensure that everything is working properly and give you some added peace of mind. After all, nothing ruins a Superbowl party like a clogged toilet at half-time.

2. Your toilet will be used heavily during your party and if it tends to give you trouble you might want to switch to thinner toilet paper. 1-ply works best and your guest won’t likely notice or mind the difference for one day.

3. In order to prevent your guests from flushing items like paper towels, “flushable” wipes (which are horrible for your toilet) and other paper products, you should remove all of these items from your bathroom. Additionally, you may want to remove any smaller objects that are around your toilet, to prevent any accidents.

4. Be wary of what goes in your garbage disposal. Let’s face it, what’s a football party without a ton of delicious and greasy foods? The problem is that your garbage disposal can only handle so much. It is extremely importachicken-wings-466556_960_720nt not to overload it with too much food at one time and always avoid pouring grease down your drain.  Wings are a popular Superbowl tradition, but you’ll want to avoid putting chicken bones in your disposal. Additionally, do not put any of the following food items down your garbage disposal at any time; potato peels, celery, artichokes, asparagus, lettuce, corn husks, carrots, onion skins, pasta, beans or rice.

5. Better safe than sorry. Keep a plunger next to your toilet just in case. And if you experience a really big clog or some other kind of plumbing disaster during your Superbowl party, don’t panic! We’ll still be open for emergency repairs. Call us at (866) 844-3770 or feel free to check us out online at TrustTiger.com and we’ll get your Superbowl party back on track!

6 Energy Saving Tips You Need To Try This Winter!

Winter has arrived in the Midwest and with it comes cold weather that can drive up your energy costs. No one wants to waste money unnecessarily and that is where these six handy energy saving tips come into play!

6 Energy Saving Tips You Need To Try This Winter!

1.  Let the light shine in.

Heating your home can be a major expense during chilly days. Give your furnace a bitenergy saving of a break and use the sun to help warm your home naturally. Open your curtains during the day and let the sunshine in. This action will help warm your home and cut energy costs.

*Remember to close your curtains again at night to help trap the warm air inside your home.

2. Switch over to LED lights.

Winter brings shorter days and less sunlight. Meaning, you are using more energy lighting your home. Help cut energy costs by switching over to more energy efficient and LED light bulbs.

3.  Prevent leaks.

Drafty doors and windows can drastically increase your heating bill each month. Even small leaks can really add up. It is best to make sure that you have properly sealed all of your doors and windows with caulk or weather strips.

* If you are concerned that your home may be leaking cold air, call us at (866)844-3770 to have an energy audit performed. An energy audit can show you all of the ways that your home is wasting energy and how you can potentially save a lot of money in the long run.

4. Keep the heat flowing.

Avoid blocking heating vents whenever possible. Not only is blocking heating vents a potential fire hazard but it also forces your heating system to work harder to keep your home warm. Make sure that your vents are not blocked by furniture, toys, clothes, etc.

5.  Make sure that your furnace is working properly.

An old, inefficient and/or malfunctioning furnace or heating system can have expensive consequences. Schedule a furnace tune-up and safety check today to ensure that your heating system is functioning at optimal levels.

*Remember having your heating system cleaned and maintained annually will increase the lifespan of your equipment and keep your system running at peak performance levels, saving you money in the long run.

6. Consider adding more insulation.

If your energy bill is higher than you believe it should be during the winter months, you may have an issue with your insulation. Insulation, especially in vulnerable locations like your attic, plays a major role in your home’s energy efficiency needs.

How to Keep Your Pipes from Freezing this Winter

As the temperatures drop below freezing it is important to protect your plumbing from the frigid winter weather that comes with living in the Midwest. Freezing pipes are one of the biggest concerns when it comes to your plumbing during the winter months. Frozen pipes can be an expensive headache and it is best to take steps to avoid them.

freezing

How to Keep Your Pipes from Freezing:

Steps to Take Before the Cold Hits:

1.  If you have pipes that run through attics, crawl spaces or other under heated locations, it is important to ensure that these pipes are well insulated. It is also important to have these pipes inspected regularly, to ensure that the insulation is holding up.

2. Make sure that you have drained all water from hoses, outdoor water supply lines, sprinklers and other outdoor plumbing fixtures.

3. Consider having some of your pipes rerouted. If you do have pipes that are constantly exposed to the frigid winter air, it may be a good idea to have one of our professional plumbers reroute them. By having these pipes rerouted to the interior of your home, you will gain peace of mind each winter that your pipes are safe from freezing. You will also save money in the long run by avoiding expensive water damage and repairs.

Steps To Take After The Cold Hits:

1. Open cabinet doors to allow heat to reach your pipes. A frozen pipe in your kitchen or bathroom can be a nightmare to deal with and expensive to fix. When the temperatures dip, open the cabinet doors underneath your kitchen and bathroom sinks so the heat can flow freely.

2. Let your faucets drip. Pipes are less likely to freeze if the water is running. So, when dealing with extremely cold temperatures, turn on both the cold and hot water taps and allow the water to slowly drip out of the faucet.

3. When you are planning on leaving your home for more than a few days, it may be wise to temporarily shut off your water supply and drain all of the water from your pipes. If you are unsure how to complete either of these tasks, simply call (866)844-3770 and a member of our plumbing team will be happy to assist you.

Remember: That if your pipes do freeze or you have another plumbing emergency that we are here for you 24/7.  Call us anytime and a real person will answer the phone to assist you with your emergency.

3 New Year’s Resolutions that are Better than Joining the Gym

2016 is quickly coming to an end and you may be making your resolutions for 2017.  Popular resolutions include: joining a gym, starting a diet or quitting a bad habit. While personal and professional resolutions are important, it is also a good idea to add a few New Year’s resolutions for your home as well.

Resolutions

Keep These 3 Resolutions in Mind for 2017:

1. Replace Your Furnace Filter.

Your furnace filter plays a vital role in keeping your heating and air conditioning systems running smoothly. Plus, your furnace filter is an important tool when it comes to improving your home’s indoor air quality and keeping your family healthier.

2. Have Your Ductwork Cleaned.

Speaking of your indoor air quality, if it has been awhile since you have had your ducts cleaned, the beginning of 2017 is a great time to give us a call. Dust mites, allergens and tiny particles love to accumulate in your ductwork. Once you turn on your HVAC system, those particles are blown into the air you and your family breathe.  Poor indoor air quality can lead to the worsening of allergies, asthma and other respiratory issues.

3. Take Control of the Humidity in Your Home.

Humidity is an important part of life in the Midwest. Unfortunately, maintaining the right levels of humidity in our homes can be tricky. Too much humidity can lead to mold and mildew growth inside your home. Too little humidity can dry out your skin and nasal passages. Both of these scenarios can be harmful to you and your family’s health. In order to ensure that your home stays between the 30-50% humidity mark, it is a good idea to have a humidity assessment performed.

If you need any help reaching any of these New Year’s resolutions for 2017, just give us a call and we will be there for you.

Are You Ready for the Cold? Eight Steps to Winterize Your Home

Having to winterize your home may not sound like a fun way to spend your weekend. However, you will be happy that you took the time to winterize and complete these eight tasks when old man winter finally rolls in.

winterize

Eight Steps to Winterize Your Home:

Step One: Have Your Heating System Inspected.

-Midwest winters can be brutally cold and the last thing you want to deal with is a broken furnace. Keep your home toasty and comfortable this winter by having your filters, fan/motor, burners, heat exchanger, electrical components, etc. inspected by one of our expert HVAC technicians.

Step Two: Tend to Your Outdoor Faucets and Plumbing.

-Frozen outdoor faucets, busted hoses and valves are a nightmare to deal with and can be expensive to fix. That is why you will want to drain your outdoor faucets and hoses. It is also a good idea to disconnect your hoses if possible. Make sure to close any shutoff valves to your outdoor faucets and switch on the tap, in order to drain the built up water from the pipes.

Step Three: Check Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors.

-If you have not checked the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, now is the perfect time to do so. Winter comes with an increased number of house fires and cases of carbon monoxide poisoning and you will want to do everything you can to protect your home and family. So, take a few minutes to put fresh batteries in your detectors and check them to ensure they are functioning properly.

Step Four: Seal Up Those Doors and Windows.

-Keep the cold outside and the warm air inside. Make sure that your window and door seals are properly caulked and ready for the harsh winter weather.

Step Five: Have Your Ductwork Cleaned and Inspected.

-Maintaining your ductwork is vital for the health of your home and family during the colder months. Wintertime means that you will be spending more time indoorsCustomer (14), so you will want the air in your home to be as safe and clean as possible. Having your ductwork cleaned is a great way to improve yours and your family’s health and quality of living. Additionally, you will want to have your ductwork sealed to prevent warm air from seeping into unheated areas in your home. Well sealed and insulated ductwork can save you a ton of money down the road.

Step Six: Remember That Insulation is Your Friend.

-Making sure that your home has adequate insulation will help save you money and keep your home nice and comfy!

Step Seven: Get Your Winter Equipment Ready.

-Grab your snow shovel and stock up on rock salt now. You do not want to wait until the first heavy snowfall and find that the stores are all sold out! Also, if you have a snow blower or winter weather equipment, now is a great time to dig them out of the garage and make sure they are working properly.

Step Eight: Take Steps to Avoid Losing Power This Winter.

-A power outage during a blizzard is a major hassle and can be dangerous if it lasts long enough. Investing in a whole home generator will ensure that the power will stay on, even when the weather is at its worst. Call us at (866) 844-3770 today, to learn more about your generator options.

Have A Safe Winter!
