What Causes Pipes to Burst in the Summer and How to Prevent Them

Burst pipes are typically a concern in the winter, due to freezing temperatures. Unfortunately, your pipes are not safe just because it is summer. Here are some reasons your pipes can burst during the warmer months and what you can do to stop it from happening!Burst

Older Pipes
Pipes will degrade and deteriorate over time, like most things. Metal pipes are especially susceptible to corrosion, while plastic pipes break down naturally over time. When the pipes in your home age, they slowly lose their ability to handle the pressures they are constantly subjected to. As your pipes deteriorate, they become more and more likely to burst. Your best defense against aging pipes is to replace them before they fail you.

Pipe Erosion and Corrosion
When your pipes erode or corrode, they create weak spots in your piping. These weak spots are vulnerable and more likely to leak and burst because they can no longer withstand the water pressure. Stay ahead of erosion and corrosion by having your pipes inspected annually.

Also, keep in mind that hot water has the potential of causing the soil around your outdoor pipes to move, which can damage and even break the pipes. This is especially true when the weather is dryer. While this typically is a larger concern for water mains found in the street, the pipes leading up to your home is also vulnerable. If you are concerned about your outdoor pipes, you can have one of our expert plumbers come to your home and assess your risks.

Clogged Pipes
A burst pipe is just one of the concerns caused by a clogged pipe. If your water happens to have a high mineral content, you may have extra reasons to be concerned. Over time, mineral deposits will build up in your pipes. This build up reduces the area in your pipes, restricting water flow and increasing pressure. In cases when the pressure exceeds the pipe’s threshold, it can cause the pipe to burst. If you happen to live in an area where the water has a higher mineral count, also known as hard water, having a water softener installed by one of our expert plumbers is an effective method to protect your pipes. Water softeners are designed to remove most of the minerals in your water and help prevent your pipes from clogging.

Poorly Installed Pipes
Unfortunately, not every plumber has as high standards as we do and poorly installed pipes are at a greater risk of failure, leaks and bursting. Whether they are improperly soldered, poorly insulated or inadequately supported, if your pipes were not installed correctly, you could be in for some unpleasant surprises. If you have any concerns about how your pipes were installed, call us at

Important Product Recall: Dehumidifier Safety Recall

Large Dehumidifier Safety Recall: A product recall has been issued for some 5.6 million dehumidifiers. This recall was issued by the United States Consumer Product Safety CDehumidifierommission (CPSC) for the overseas manufacturers of Gree and Midea. These manufacturers make and distribute many popular brands sold here in the U.S. Unfortunately, several of these brands and products have been found to pose safety risks and have been recalled to protect consumers.

Several hundred dehumidifiers manufactured by Gree have caused around $19 million in damage and have been reported to cause fires. Some units created by Midea have reportedly caused somewhere around $4.8 million in property damage (CPSC).

What To-Do About This Dehumidifier Recall?

If you purchased a dehumidifier between January of 2005 and through today, we highly suggest that you follow these steps.

-First, you will need to find the model number on your dehumidifier. (Check the back, sides and front of the unit for a name plate sticker).

-After you have located the model number, you will need to visit the manufacturer’s website to see if your model has been recalled.

– If you discover that your dehumidifier has been recalled, you will need to unplug it immediately.

-You will then want to call the manufacturer’s hotline for further instructions.

  • Gree: 1-866-853-2802
  • Midea: 1-800-600-3055

We will happily send one of our Technical Experts to your home, to check and see if your dehumidifier is on the recall list. Then they can walk you through each step of the process. Just call (886)844-3770 and we will send someone to your home when it is convenient for you!

Tiger Signature Series Dehumidifiers

-If you are looking for a safer dehumidifier for your home, we have the perfect solution for you. Investing in a Tiger Signature Series Dehumidifier is one of the best ways to protect your basement and keep it dry.

Our dehumidifiers are:

  • Extremely durable and are designed to spend a great deal of time working in a damp basement.
  • Designed to help protect your basement from mold and mildew growth and remove unpleasant odors.
  • Created with the utmost convenience in mind. They can be hooked up to a drain, eliminating the need for you to constantly empty water from the unit.
  • Accompanied with a 5-year warranty on parts.
  • Made to save you time and money!
  • Both designed and assembled right here in the United States of America.

Our dehumidifiers are also more energy efficient and designed to last quite a bit longer than most other popular brands. Dehumidifiers typically work by frequently cycling on and off in an attempt to keep up with a damp basement. All of this powering on and off can cause wear and tear on a unit’s compressor. The Tiger Signature Series Dehumidifier is designed to handle the extreme workload.

This extra durability means that you will need to replace and/or repair a Tiger Signature Series Dehumidifier less often than most other dehumidifiers. Most other brands need to be replaced 3-4 times compared to the life expectancy of just one of our dehumidifiers.

Plus, the more energy efficient design of our dehumidifier can save you as much as $189 on your annual electric bill.

AC 101: Why is My Air Conditioning Unit Leaking?

A leaking Air Conditioning Unit poses several concerns and is a major sign that something is wrong with your system. Leaking AC units can cause water damage and even a fire if it gets near electrical equipment.

So why do leaks happen in an Air Conditioning Unit anyway?
Here are some possible reasons:

-Frozen evaporator coils

If the evaporator coils form ice on them, this build-up can melt and overflow from your drain pan.

There are three main causes of a frozen coil:

1. Dirty filter: If your filter becomes dirty, it will slow the airflow through the coil, causing it to get too cold and possibly form ice on the surface. An easy way to avoid this outcome is to replace your filter as recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Low pressure in the refrigerant lines: If there is not enough refrigerant in your unit, the pressure will lower. This will reduce the coil’s ability to remove heat from the air, which causes the coil to freeze. Low refrigerant levels can cause some serious damage to your compressor so you will need to turn off your Air Conditioning Unit and call us immediately!

3. Issues with the fan: If you notice low airflow coming through your vents in addition to the frozen coil, issues with your fan are likely the cause. Shut off your Air Conditioning Unit right away and call us to correct the problem.

-Condensation issues

Air Conditioning Units do more than simply keep the air in your home cool. They also help Air Conditioning Unitremove the humidity as well. This is done by removing condensation. If condensation is building up and overflowing, you might have condensate drainage problems. Here are three possible reasons why:

1. A blockage in the condensate drain: a blockage will cause a backup. Clear the drain if you can or call us to clean the line for you.

2. A damaged drain pan: your drain pan might be cracked and leaking condensation. It is often best to replace a damaged drain pan, to avoid future issues.

3. A broken condensation pump: depending on where your Air Conditioning Unit is located, you might have a pump that removes the condensation. If this pump becomes broken, water can build up and overflow. Which means you will need to replace the pump.

Call us at (866)844-3770 of you notice that your
Air Conditioning Unit is Leaking!

Cut Your Cooling Costs with These Six Money-Saving Tips

The summer’s heat and humidity have arrived and with them comes the need to cool your home around the clock. This constant cooling of your home will undoubtedly cause an increase in your monthly utility bills. Cooling your home really is not optional when the temperatures start hitting the 90’s, but you do have some methods you can use to help keep the cooling bill lower.

Six Tips to Cut Cooling Costs

1. Utilize Ceiling Fans: cooling

Ceiling fans help your air conditioning system by taking on some of the work. By circulating the cool air in your home, your AC will not have to work as hard to keep you cool and comfortable.

2. Seal Leaky Windows

Windows that are poorly sealed and leaking air are inefficient and they are costing you more money when you are running your AC. Utilizing weather strips and caulk to seal up any leaks will help save you money on your cooling bill.

3. Replace Your Furnace Filter Regularly

The air filter in your furnace will naturally become dirty over time. Dust, pet hair and debris are just some of the elements that can cling to your filter, slowing the air flow. Thus, a dirty filter will cause your air conditioner to work harder, to move cool air throughout your home. It is best to change your filter as recommended by the manufacturer.

4. Close Your Curtains

This is probably the easiest cooling cost-cutting task you can perform. When sunlight pours into your home, it warms it. So, by simply closing your curtains, especially those where the sun beams in the brightest, will help keep your home cooler.

5. Have a Programmable Thermostat Installed

Programmable thermostats are extremely useful little gadgets. They allow you to reduce the amount of energy needed to cool your home and make sure your home is still comfortable when you get home. You program these thermostats to adjust the temperature to a comfortable level when you are home and set it to run less often when you are not there. No more wasting extra money cooling your home, when no one is there. You can see real savings on your monthly energy bill by simply adjusting your thermostat seven to ten degrees, eight hours a day when no one is home.

6. Have Your AC Inspected Annually

Having your air conditioning unit serviced once a year is one of the best ways to ensure that your equipment is running as efficiently as possible, which will save you more money on your cooling bill.  Call on the experts at Team Tiger to perform your annual AC Super Tune-Up and Safety Inspection today at (866) 844-3770  and be ready for whatever summer throws your way.

Home Improvement Projects Where You Should Skip the DIY and Call a Professional

DIY projects can be fun and a great way to increase your home’s value; however, some home improvement projects are better left to the professionals. Safety, cost and timeliness are just some of the concerns to consider when deciding whether or not to do a project yourself or call in a pro. Check out this list of home improvement projects that are not meant to receive the DIY treatment.

DIY

Projects That Are Not Made For DIY

1. Electrical Updates

Outdated electrical components and wiring pose many problems for homeowners in terms of safety and convenience. While upgrading an electrical panel, wiring, adding more outlets and other updates are great home improvement projects, they are also dangerous. Electricians spend a great deal of time learning how to handle electricity safely and properly. So, when it comes time to upgrade your home’s electrical work, it is best to call in the professionals here at Tiger!

2. Roofing

Repairing or replacing a home’s roofing is a monumental task that is better left for licensed professionals. DIY roofing projects are extremely dangerous and often quite costly, calling the pros when a new roof is needed is the best way to go.

3. Plumbing Work

Even the smallest plumbing repairs can go extremely wrong, extremely quickly. Imagine the mess an improperly installed toilet or piping could make. Avoid the hassles of leaks, water damage and sanitation issues by calling one of our expert plumbers to handle all of your plumbing needs.

4. Adding an Additional Bathroom

Who wouldn’t love an extra bathroom in their home? The added convenience Adding a bathroomand home value makes the idea of adding another bathroom appealing. However, building an additional bathroom is not an easy DIY project to take on yourself. Hanging drywall, laying tile and installing fixtures often require a professional’s touch to get them right. Running new plumbing lines, hooking up the water supply, wiring the space and placing ductwork are tasks that can be dangerous and expensive when done incorrectly. When it comes to adding a new bathroom, it is best to leave it to the pros.

5. Structural Changes

Licensed professionals are vital when it comes to making structural changes to your home. Some projects will require special permits, depending on where you live, a  licensed pro should know what is needed. Knocking down walls without knowing what damage it will cause is extremely dangerous. Other projects may weaken your home’s foundation. These types of projects will go more smoothly when left to the professionals.

When deciding whether or not to give a home improvement project the DIY treatment, consider these important questions.

  • Is this project worth the time and effort I will have to put into it?
  • Do I have the necessary tools and skills to do this project correctly?
  • What are the safety issues I should consider?

DIY projects can be fun; however, it is often best to leave the larger or more dangerous projects to the professionals.

6 Reasons Why Your Hot Water is Unexpectedly Cold

Waking up early and hopping into a cold shower is not a fun way to start your day. So what is causing your hot water to run cold? One of these six reasons is likely to blame for your icy wake-up call.

water

Reasons Your Hot Water is Cold

1. Leaking hot water pipe

If a pipe is leaking in your basement, for example, it won’t reach your bathroom, especially if your shower is on the second floor. As long as the pipe isn’t hidden in a wall, you should be able to find the problem easily. However, a leak in a hidden pipe could be more of a challenge to detect. Call us right away at (866)844-3770 if you suspect that you might have a leaking pipe.

2. The pilot light is out

This is a potential issue if you have a gas-fired water heater. If you don’t know how to check your heater for the pilot light, look in your owner’s manual. Follow the instructions to relight it and if it doesn’t work, you likely have a bigger problem that needs special attention.

3. The burner isn’t working

Electric heaters have an element (sometimes two) that heats the water. If you do not have hot water and there is no leak, your element might not be working. These water heaters typically have a lifespan of about 7-10 years so if your heater is around this age, it’s possible that the element has failed and needs replacement.

4. The thermostat is set wrong or not working.

Water heaters have a thermostat set at a specific temperature. It might be set too low and not giving you hot enough water to have your shower. Follow the instructions to change the thermostat setting. If it still doesn’t work, you may need to change your thermostat.

5. The Breaker Tripped

Your water heater might have tripped the breaker. Check your panel and reset the breaker. If it happens again, that signals an electrical problem and you should give us a call right away. You may have to replace your heater, depending on the severity of the problem.

6. The tank is too small

If everything is working well but you constantly face a cold shower if you’re the last one in, your heater might be undersized. You can either race to the bathroom before everyone else, wait for the water to heat up again, or replace your heater with one that has a larger capacity.

Call in a professional

Don’t take chances with your hot water system. Give us a call to make sure everything is working well and to keep your hot water running.
