Labor Day Already? Are You Ready for the Changing Seasons?

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer here in the Midwest. The weather will slowly start to transition from hot, humid summer temperatures to cool, crisp autumn air. As we begin to move from one season to another, here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure that you are ready for what is to come.

Labor Day

Life After Labor Day:

One important thing to keep in mind is that summer is ending, it is not over. You will want to hold off on packing up those summer clothes and you will likely want to keep using your AC for the next several weeks. The good news is that as the days start to become a little cooler, your AC will need to run less often to keep you and your family comfortable. Saving energy and money!ceiling-fan-558988_960_720 (1)

A ceiling fan will also go a long way in keeping your home comfortable over the next couple of months. Ceiling fans will help distribute the cooler air throughout your home, causing your AC to run less often.

Seasonal Allergies:

With the changing weather comes fall allergies, making this time of year rough for those of us who have to battle seasonal allergens. Ragweed, pollen, dust mites, all on top of all the other allergen triggers can turn the beautiful months of fall into a sneezing nightmare. While you may not be able to do much about the air outside, you can clean and purify the air you breathe inside your home.

Start by changing the air filter inside your furnace. Changing your air filter as recommended will not only greatly improve your indoor air quality, but it will also help your heating and cooling system run more efficiently.

The next step is to have a member of our team come out and thoroughly clean and sanitize your ductwork. Having your ducts cleaned is a great way to get the allergens and bacteria out of the air you and your family breathes. Call (866)844-3770 to schedule your duct cleaning today!

Have a Safe and Happy Labor Day!

Welcome September and Hello Unreasonable Weather

September is here already! In the Midwest, September means the kids are back at school, pools start closing down, pumpkin flavored everything hits the grocery stores. But what September is most known for in this area, is its crazy, unpredictable, roller-coaster weatheclouds-429228_640r!

Yes, the next few weeks we can expect the weather to teeter between hot summer days and frosty autumn nights. One day we’ll see the temperatures reach into the high 90’s, with unbearable humidity and the next day you’ll be wearing sweaters and jackets. And there are the days that will start out on one temperature extreme and end on the other.

While September tries to figure out what season it wants to be in, we’re stuck trying to keep our homes comfortable and our energy bills as low as possible. These tasks are a lot trickier than they should be! But we have the insider advice you need to know when dealing with the back and forth transition from hot to cooler temperatures.

Hot weather turns cooler, so you turn off your air conditioner and open the windows. Then things heat back up, so you shut those windows and turn your air conditioner back on. We experienced this just last week. The August heat broke and we had a week or so of nice cooler, almost fall like temperatures. Then the next thing we knew, summer came roaring back with a vengeance.

With this bewindow-192242_640ing the first week of September, we can expect these yo-yo temperatures to occur a dozen more times. The key here is to NOT keep turning your air conditioner on and off, and opening and closing your windows.

Most people believe that doing this will save them money on their energy bill. Unfortunately, this isn’t true. Every time you open your windows, you’re not only letting the cooler air in, but your home is also filling up with humidity.

When you turn your air conditioner back on, itprotip will run twice as long and twice as hard, to both cool your home and remove the humidity, which in turn will cost you big bucks on your energy bill. Instead of turning your air conditioner off and opening a window, simply turn the temperature up. Your unit will run less, you’ll still be comfortable and you’ll see the savings on your energy bill.

Get the Jump on Fall Allergies and Breathe Easier

Fall allergy season is just around the corner. Are you ready for the itchy, watery eyes, the running nose, the stuffy head, the sore throat, the coughing, sneezing and all of the other lovely symptoms that accompany your seasonal allergies?woman-698953_640

If you’re like most people who suffer from seasonal allergies, you spend most of autumn indoors trying to avoid all of the ragweed and mold in the air. Unfortunately, the air indoors is often much worse for your allergies than the air outside.

Ragweed can be dragged in with you when you enter your house. Mold thrives anywhere damp and may already be in your home. Dust mites are likely already clinging to just about every surface. And there are dozens of other indoor pollutants, floating around in the air you’re breathing.

Every time youmite-67638_640 inhale, you may be breathing in all of those pollutants and worsening your allergies. Additionally, if you live in a home with poor indoor air quality, you can suffer from frequent headaches, chest colds, worsening of your asthma symptoms, bronchitis and other respiratory issues. So, does that mean you’re doomed to spend every fall in misery? Not at all!

By switching to a High Efficiency Air Filter, you can help lessen the power seasonal allergies have on your life.

High Efficiency Air Filter 101

  • Most heating and cooling systems still use a basic air filter.
  • These filters were originally designed to protect the equipment and not the people served by the equipment.
  • The average air filter is only capable of removing three to five percent of the particles that pass through it, l142715_image2 copyeaving 93-95% of all indoor pollutants in the air you’re breathing.
  • Today, they are several types of permanent air filters available in various efficiencies that can help you filter the air in your home.
  • If you suffer from allergies, asthma, hay fever or other breathing difficulties, there is an air filter that can help you.
  • We can even provide you with the same type of air filter used in hospital operating rooms. So, not only will your seasonal allergy symptoms improve, but your indoor air quality will be much better all year long.

Prevent HVAC Issues Before The Cold Months… These Tips Will Save You Time & Money This Winter!

Those of us in the Midwest appreciate how well heating works in the cold months. I’ve lived throughout the region, and have experienced temperatures in the teens at night in October, and hard frost in the morning. While I know to expect harsh weather in the Metro East, I want to snuggle up at home without having to pile on every single blanket I own. I count on my HVAC system to work when I need it, and I know to pay attention when things don’t appear to work correctly. Minding my HVAC system early on in the fall helps me prepare for cold nights in the winter, so I don’t have to shiver while waiting for a technician.

small_8121287668How can one avoid problems with heating in the winter? You actually have to begin your plan early in the year, probably when you are not using your heating and air as much. This is where it gets tricky, because if you’re less likely to run your air conditioner or furnace, you probably won’t think much of it. Therefore, you may neglect regular inspections and checking the filters to see if they need to be replaced. If you do neglect seasonal maintenance, you run the risk of problems in the future. Clogged filters won’t put out the heat you need, and you may automatically reach for the thermostat to crank up the temperature. In turn, your HVAC system probably works harder than it has to, and you end up paying more when the utility bills come in. A clogged filter can also circulate more allergens around your home, increasing the risk of illness more often.

small_3355569230There is a solution that definitely won’t cost you so much money – check up on your filters every month or so and replace accordingly. Keep the air circulating clearly throughout the house and make sure nothing is blocked against your vents. Let the passage of air come through and warm up your home. Tiger Heating & Air Conditioning even offers lifetime warranty washable filters and electronic air cleaners that are much more effective than standard paper filters.

Another problem with high utility bills you might experience could come from heating rooms that aren’t in use. If you spend more time in your bedroom or living room, there may not be a reason to heat guest rooms if nobody is staying over. Before winter hits, consider looking into upgrading your system so that you can control which rooms get more heat, and which ones are set at a comfortable level, in case you have guests over around the holidays.Technician inspecting furnace

You can avoid problems with heating and air in the winter by having the professionals at Tiger inspect your ducts and units before the cold comes along. Preventative actions taken in the fall can help you stay cozy and warm through the holidays.

Now is the best time to get your HVAC system professionally checked by Tiger Heating & Air Conditioning technicians. You can schedule an appointment today by visiting www.TrustTiger.com or by calling 1-866-TIGER70.
