Cut Your Cooling Costs with These Six Money-Saving Tips

The summer’s heat and humidity have arrived and with them comes the need to cool your home around the clock. This constant cooling of your home will undoubtedly cause an increase in your monthly utility bills. Cooling your home really is not optional when the temperatures start hitting the 90’s, but you do have some methods you can use to help keep the cooling bill lower.

Six Tips to Cut Cooling Costs

1. Utilize Ceiling Fans: cooling

Ceiling fans help your air conditioning system by taking on some of the work. By circulating the cool air in your home, your AC will not have to work as hard to keep you cool and comfortable.

2. Seal Leaky Windows

Windows that are poorly sealed and leaking air are inefficient and they are costing you more money when you are running your AC. Utilizing weather strips and caulk to seal up any leaks will help save you money on your cooling bill.

3. Replace Your Furnace Filter Regularly

The air filter in your furnace will naturally become dirty over time. Dust, pet hair and debris are just some of the elements that can cling to your filter, slowing the air flow. Thus, a dirty filter will cause your air conditioner to work harder, to move cool air throughout your home. It is best to change your filter as recommended by the manufacturer.

4. Close Your Curtains

This is probably the easiest cooling cost-cutting task you can perform. When sunlight pours into your home, it warms it. So, by simply closing your curtains, especially those where the sun beams in the brightest, will help keep your home cooler.

5. Have a Programmable Thermostat Installed

Programmable thermostats are extremely useful little gadgets. They allow you to reduce the amount of energy needed to cool your home and make sure your home is still comfortable when you get home. You program these thermostats to adjust the temperature to a comfortable level when you are home and set it to run less often when you are not there. No more wasting extra money cooling your home, when no one is there. You can see real savings on your monthly energy bill by simply adjusting your thermostat seven to ten degrees, eight hours a day when no one is home.

6. Have Your AC Inspected Annually

Having your air conditioning unit serviced once a year is one of the best ways to ensure that your equipment is running as efficiently as possible, which will save you more money on your cooling bill.  Call on the experts at Team Tiger to perform your annual AC Super Tune-Up and Safety Inspection today at (866) 844-3770  and be ready for whatever summer throws your way.

Home Improvement Projects Where You Should Skip the DIY and Call a Professional

DIY projects can be fun and a great way to increase your home’s value; however, some home improvement projects are better left to the professionals. Safety, cost and timeliness are just some of the concerns to consider when deciding whether or not to do a project yourself or call in a pro. Check out this list of home improvement projects that are not meant to receive the DIY treatment.

DIY

Projects That Are Not Made For DIY

1. Electrical Updates

Outdated electrical components and wiring pose many problems for homeowners in terms of safety and convenience. While upgrading an electrical panel, wiring, adding more outlets and other updates are great home improvement projects, they are also dangerous. Electricians spend a great deal of time learning how to handle electricity safely and properly. So, when it comes time to upgrade your home’s electrical work, it is best to call in the professionals here at Tiger!

2. Roofing

Repairing or replacing a home’s roofing is a monumental task that is better left for licensed professionals. DIY roofing projects are extremely dangerous and often quite costly, calling the pros when a new roof is needed is the best way to go.

3. Plumbing Work

Even the smallest plumbing repairs can go extremely wrong, extremely quickly. Imagine the mess an improperly installed toilet or piping could make. Avoid the hassles of leaks, water damage and sanitation issues by calling one of our expert plumbers to handle all of your plumbing needs.

4. Adding an Additional Bathroom

Who wouldn’t love an extra bathroom in their home? The added convenience Adding a bathroomand home value makes the idea of adding another bathroom appealing. However, building an additional bathroom is not an easy DIY project to take on yourself. Hanging drywall, laying tile and installing fixtures often require a professional’s touch to get them right. Running new plumbing lines, hooking up the water supply, wiring the space and placing ductwork are tasks that can be dangerous and expensive when done incorrectly. When it comes to adding a new bathroom, it is best to leave it to the pros.

5. Structural Changes

Licensed professionals are vital when it comes to making structural changes to your home. Some projects will require special permits, depending on where you live, a  licensed pro should know what is needed. Knocking down walls without knowing what damage it will cause is extremely dangerous. Other projects may weaken your home’s foundation. These types of projects will go more smoothly when left to the professionals.

When deciding whether or not to give a home improvement project the DIY treatment, consider these important questions.

  • Is this project worth the time and effort I will have to put into it?
  • Do I have the necessary tools and skills to do this project correctly?
  • What are the safety issues I should consider?

DIY projects can be fun; however, it is often best to leave the larger or more dangerous projects to the professionals.

6 Reasons Why Your Hot Water is Unexpectedly Cold

Waking up early and hopping into a cold shower is not a fun way to start your day. So what is causing your hot water to run cold? One of these six reasons is likely to blame for your icy wake-up call.

water

Reasons Your Hot Water is Cold

1. Leaking hot water pipe

If a pipe is leaking in your basement, for example, it won’t reach your bathroom, especially if your shower is on the second floor. As long as the pipe isn’t hidden in a wall, you should be able to find the problem easily. However, a leak in a hidden pipe could be more of a challenge to detect. Call us right away at (866)844-3770 if you suspect that you might have a leaking pipe.

2. The pilot light is out

This is a potential issue if you have a gas-fired water heater. If you don’t know how to check your heater for the pilot light, look in your owner’s manual. Follow the instructions to relight it and if it doesn’t work, you likely have a bigger problem that needs special attention.

3. The burner isn’t working

Electric heaters have an element (sometimes two) that heats the water. If you do not have hot water and there is no leak, your element might not be working. These water heaters typically have a lifespan of about 7-10 years so if your heater is around this age, it’s possible that the element has failed and needs replacement.

4. The thermostat is set wrong or not working.

Water heaters have a thermostat set at a specific temperature. It might be set too low and not giving you hot enough water to have your shower. Follow the instructions to change the thermostat setting. If it still doesn’t work, you may need to change your thermostat.

5. The Breaker Tripped

Your water heater might have tripped the breaker. Check your panel and reset the breaker. If it happens again, that signals an electrical problem and you should give us a call right away. You may have to replace your heater, depending on the severity of the problem.

6. The tank is too small

If everything is working well but you constantly face a cold shower if you’re the last one in, your heater might be undersized. You can either race to the bathroom before everyone else, wait for the water to heat up again, or replace your heater with one that has a larger capacity.

Call in a professional

Don’t take chances with your hot water system. Give us a call to make sure everything is working well and to keep your hot water running.

How to Protect Your Air Conditioner from Storm Damage

These past few weeks have brought a lot of rain and storms to the area. In addition to all of these storms, the temperatures have also been climbing. You have likely been running your air conditioning system to keep your home comfortable. Unfortunately, thunderstorms can pose a serious risk to your ACFollow these handy tips when a strong storm hits and help protect your
Air Conditioner from the elements.

storm

-Turn Off Your AC During Thunderstorms

Whenever possible turn off your air conditioner before a storm hits. Strong storms typically mean lightning. Electrical surges are common when lightning hits and you don’t want your AC’s electrical components destroyed, or risk a fire! If the weather is particularly hot, you can usually run your AC until the sky darkens. Keep in mind, however; lightning might be flashing before the rain comes so don’t wait that long, to turn off your unit.

-Cover Your AC Before A Storm

Covering your air conditioning unit can be a great option to help protect it during a strong storm. Fast winds, hail and flying debris can cause some serious damage to the exposed components on your unit. You can use a tarp or even a board to cover your AC, to help protect it when severe weather hits.

*Make sure your cover is secure so it doesn’t turn into debris itself to cause damage elsewhere, and after the storm passes, remove the covering before starting up your unit again.

-Clean Up Your Yard

Speaking of flying debris, cleaning up your yard is a great way to help reduce the amount of debris that can be tossed around. Well before a storm hits, pack away outdoor furniture, toys, your barbecue pit and anything else that’s not tied down. Clean up branches that might have fallen and remove anything else that could puncture your AC equipment. Collaborate with neighbors to clean up their yards as well. Storms have no respect for property lines!

*If the storm is already rolling in or you see lightning, it is best to skip this step. Your own safety is more important.

-Inspect and Clean Your AC Before Start-up

Once the storm has passed and it is safe to go outside, it is a good idea to do a thorough inspection of your AC unit and refrigerant piping to check for damage. Be sure to clear any debris that might be covering your air conditioning unit. As long as you’re certain that the unit is free from damage and debris, turn it on and monitor to make sure it’s working as it should.

-Get Professional Help

If despite your best efforts, your unit or piping has been damaged, call us right away at (866)844-3770We can also help you prepare for the storms ahead and reduce your equipments risk of being damaged.

The School Year is Ending! Are You Ready for Summer Break?

It is May and we all know what that means, the school year is almost over! With summer break approaching quickly, you may be trying to plan ways to keep the kiddos entertained for the next few months. Fear not! Here are some helpful activities you can do with the kids this summer!

summer

Summer Break Activities:

1. Water Fun

Beat the heat this summer with the kids by breaking out the hose! Kiddie pools, water balloon fights and running through sprinklers are some of the best benefits of dealing with the summer heat! The good news is that your family can enjoy the waterworks, without sending your monthly bill through the roof. Try only filling kiddie pools about halfway, instead of all the way to the top, most of that water will just splash out and be wasted anyway. If you’re using sprinklers, try running the hose on a lower setting versus having it going at full blast. Your kids will still have fun playing with the sprinkler and you’ll save a little money on your water bill.

2. Light Reading

One downside to summer is that kids can actually lose some of what they learned from the school year over the break. Encourage kids to read more to help fight against this knowledge loss. There are several great summer reading programs in our area. The more time kids spend reading, the less time they are spending on video games, watching TV or bugging you because they are bored. So, if you are looking for a way to keep the kids busy this summer, place them in a well-lit room, with a good book!

3. Plant a Garden

A small garden, even just a simple herb garden, can be a fun activity for you and your kids to do over the school break. Gardening is a great way to teach kids about patience, the seasons, watering practices and it gets them outdoors for awhile!

4. Camp at Home

Grab a tent and head out to the backyard. Backyard camping is a lot of fun and conveniently located next to your own personal bathroom! String up some outdoor lights and roast marshmallows over a fire pit if you have one and tell funny campfire stories.

5. Stay Cool in the Kitchen

Baking is always a fun activity, but a hot kitchen can be an unpleasant place to be during the hot summer months. Skip the part where you add extra heat to home and opt for making no-bake treats with the kiddos!

Have a Great Summer Everyone!

3 Reasons to Schedule Your Air Conditioning Tune-Up ASAP

Remember how hot and miserable last summer was? Temperature records were broken all over the place and who knows what this summer will have in store for us! Your air conditioning is one of your best defenses against the summer heat and you do not want it to give up on you during a hot spell. So, whether you have already been running your AC unit or you are still holding out, now is the perfect time to schedule a tune-up.

 Air Conditioning

Here Are Three Benefits of Scheduling an Air Conditioning Tune-Up

1. Helps Prevent Your Unit From Breaking Down When You Need it the Most

The temperatures will reach into the 90’s and 100’s several times this summer, we can basically bank on that fact. When the temperatures climb that high, you will want to know that your air conditioning unit will be able to keep up with the heat. Yearly maintenance and tune-ups are one of the best ways to help ensure that your AC will keep working for you when you need it the most.

2. Extends the Lifetime of Your Unit

If your unit is not properly maintained, it will likely fail you sooner than it should. This will mean that you will need to replace your AC well before you should have to. Annual tune-ups are an excellent way to save you money or needing to buy a new unit sooner than expected.

3. Saves You Money

Another way that AC tune-ups can save you money is on your energy bill. Annual maintenance helps to keep your Air Conditioning Unit running as efficiently as possible. The more efficient your AC is, the more money you will save on your energy bill.

Summer is approaching quickly, making now the best time to schedule your Air Conditioning Tune-Up and beat the rush!

4 Reasons Why You Should Hug a Plumber Today!

Happy Hug a Plumber Day!

That is right; every April 25th is designated as Hug a Plumber Day. While this may seem like an odd holiday to celebrate, plumbers are extremely important members of society and we can prove it to you.

Here are 4 Reasons Why You Should Hug a Plumber Today!

1.  They Keep Everything Flowing

In the busy world that we live in, it is easy to take for granted that our toilets will flush when we push the handle or that water will come out when we turn on our faucets. Unfortunately, things break, drains clog and basements flood, then what? Then you contact a plumber to come and put your life back in order.

2. Plumbers Make House Calls

Doctors do not even do this anymore. When you need one of our plumbers, they arrive at your doorstep in a fully-stocked truck, ready to fix the problem.

3. Plumbers Help Protect Your Health

Clean water and properly functioning sanitation facilities play a vital role in keeping you and your family healthy. When you invite a plumber into your home to repair a backed up sewage drain or diagnose why your faucet is spewing brown sludge, you are actually taking steps to keep your family healthy, as well as, comfortable.

4. They Train Hard

Licensed Plumbers do not fall out of trees. No, they spend a great deal of time training to perfect their craft. Plus this training is not a one-time experience, for example, our plumbing team undergoes ongoing training, to remain at the top of their field.

If you come across a plumber today, feel free to give them a big hug!

Spring Rain and Your Plumbing: How April Showers Can Damage Your Pipes

Spring is here! Goodbye, yucky winter weather and short days. Say hello to budding leaves, blooming flowers and rain, lots and lots of rain. While spring brings the excitement of warming weather, it also brings hazards like heavy April rain showers, basement flooding and damaged pipes.pipes

Here are some ways your pipes can be affected by April rain showers:

1. Moving water can erode soil where a pipe is buried; exposing it.

Heavy rain can create rushing water that becomes a powerful force. This force can erode the soil around buried pipes, exposing them to damage. This is particularly concerning for the plumbing lines coming to your house from the city’s system.

Make sure you know where your pipes are buried and take extra care during and after flooding to avoid those areas. Once the rainwater has subsided, do a thorough check to make sure they are still buried. If the soil has been eroded, inspect the pipes for damage or have one of our plumbing experts come out and inspect them for you.

2. Pipes can burst.

Flooding brings debris as well as lots of water. This debris can easily gather in a storm/drain pipes causing them to back up. If the pressure is high enough from the water draining, this can lead to bursting. You can minimize the risk of bursting by keeping your yard clean so there is less debris to back up your drainage system.

3. Pipes can corrode faster.

Depending on the material of your piping, exposure to flood waters and any changes in water chemistry can cause it to rust faster. This most often happens over a number of seasons of flooding and heavy rains. Inspect any visible piping for signs of rust, particularly if you have old cast iron piping in your home. Copper also corrodes and gets pinhole leaks so you still have to inspect those pipes as well.

4. Dirt and debris in the water supply can erode pipes internally.

Erosion is another way pipes can be damaged. Floodwaters carry sediment that destroys the
internal wall of drainpipes. While you cannot inspect the inside of pipes, you can call in one of our plumbing experts if you are concerned that you might be at risk for damaged piping from dirt and sediment erosion.

5. Prevention and cure.

Let us inspect your home’s plumbing to make sure it can withstand this April’s showers. When the floodwaters subside, we can help you find and repair any damage you may have incurred. Give us a call and we will keep your piping in shape for many more years of spring weather!
